After shooting and editing thousands of newborn baby photos the past 2 years, I have been able to create and refine a preset that works quite well light-skinned n00bs. Typically newborns are pretty ruddy especially when they get agitated. I suspect they have a rich surface capillary network that allows them (when in utero) to draw in warmth from the amniotic fluid that surrounds them. These capillaries are a liability when out of that environment into air as they can lose body heat fast.
When I shoot newborns I tell the parents to make the room we will be shooting in uncomfortably warm for adults --and I bring shorts to change into when I shoot so I am comfortable. Even in a very warm room, you keep the baby covered up and warm, uncover and shoot for a minute or two, they start to cry, wrap them up for a few minutes and repeat repeatedly. I need to let the parents know this is the way it is going to go as otherwise they can get stressed feeling that they are wasting your time or that you are getting impatient.
