Had a great time making these photos with Amanda and Jeff. Rain was in the forecast so Amanda purchased this heart-shaped umbrella. I bought it from her at the end of the night!

A good portrait captures the personality...and is interesting...can be revisited many times and perused at length.

There is a reason a JC Penny, Sears or People Place portrait is so cheap. Soul-less and mundane. What kid is soul-less and mundane? 

A great portrait is something to be cherished. Something that is forever evocative of the time it was taken. Don't waste you money on cheap portraits...you'll get those from the school anyway. 

Invest in a portrait; don't buy a picture.

I have this dream where I raise dragonflies in my home or backyard and take photos documenting their lives as nymphs and their metamorphosis into the adults of Odonota...going to leave out the damselflies though. Also I will spend lots of times around lakes and ponds taking photos of dragonflies. I have a great name for the coffee table book that will be the culmination of this project. 

It's a simple dream. I am a simple guy.

A favorite from the Livad Skincare shoot in Manhattan recently. One beauty dish on a boom and a pair of backlights on white seamless. Nikon D4 and Nikon 105mm F/2.8 VR lens.

We also took a bunch of photos standing in the Rio Grande at sunset while she was wearing a shimmery blue dress. I will post a few of those if there is some interest here.

After shooting and editing thousands of newborn baby photos the past 2 years, I have been able to create and refine a preset that works quite well light-skinned n00bs. Typically newborns are pretty ruddy especially when they get agitated. I suspect they have a rich surface capillary network that allows them (when in utero) to draw in warmth from the amniotic fluid that surrounds them.These capillaries are a liability when out of that environment into air as they can lose body heat fast. 

When I shoot newborns I tell the parents to make the room we will be shooting in uncomfortably warm for adults --and I bring shorts to change into when I shoot so I am comfortable. Even in a very warm room, you keep the baby covered up and warm, uncover and shoot for a minute or two, they start to cry, wrap them up for a few minutes and repeat repeatedly. I need to let the parents know this is the way it is going to go as otherwise they can get stressed feeling that they are wasting your time or that you are getting impatient.

For this shoot I used a monolight triggered with a PocketWizard2. I used a 10x36 sofbox and placed it on the floor behind me, the lightstand as low as it could go. Power was also very low as I wanted to shoot at at f/4.0 or less. Custom white balance but I shot RAW (NEF) with my Nikon D800. Nikon 24-75mm f/2.8 lens.

Very happy with these photos and now I want to do it again with more apples!! I think we used about 24 pounds and could have used more!
